“IT SOUNDED LIKE I GOT HIT BY A FUCKING TRAIN…”

…isn’t the typical accolade given to an unknown band showing up with a small mountain of gear just to open a show – but this band would have it no other way.

Blending a David Lynch-like paranoia with the dissonant haze of scarlet fever, Sleepcomesdown create a sound likened not only to train collision, but a hellish interpretation of Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” as well.

With a growing reputation for a live set that packs as much reverb, strobe light and controlled chaos in a 30 min. set as possible, the Milwaukee quintet adhere to a D.I.Y. spirit that not only includes booking their own shows, but also building their own recording space or creating and screen printing all of their own artwork.

Recorded in 2008 by the band and longtime co-conspirator Matt Miller in the band’s own practice space, Vapor Kicks is the aural equivalent of Polaroid taken of a band continuously evolving. As you read this, work is nearing completion on a follow up recording entirely by the band without the aid of prying eyes.

Stay tuned…

“The ominous cool of Sonic Youth and Unwound is an easy ploy for a band to hide behind, and so is the circuit-stabbing experimentation of Health and Black Dice. To merge the two takes a little more dedication and surprisingly doesn’t mean getting swallowed whole in pretension, at least for Milwaukee-via-Kenosha band Sleepcomesdown. As clearly as these influences come through, they also inspire the five-piece to expand and revise its palette of textural gadgets and reverb-laden effects with each song. Synths and “electronics” (increasingly, a catch-all term for “random things that aren’t typical rock-band instruments”) have a way of supporting the band’s creepily-cooed vocals and post-punk guitar hooks.”

“Milwaukee’s Sleepcomesdown chances something much more flexible, meshing all manner of hissing and sizzling gadgets with post-punk chills…”

“…performed a set that seemed to turn a chaotic compilation of chords, riffs and steel into one seamless sound and presentation.”

“Milwaukee’s Sleepcomesdown bring their big, psychedelic post-punk sounds to Chicago’s Subterranean tonight. Their songs are filled with atmospheric touches that give them a dark bite but still retain some sweet grooves. The track “Soothe Your Sting” from their Myspace page starts as a tambourine and echo-loop slow burner but eventually picks up the pace and veers off into prog-rock territory with twisted guitar riffs and careening vocals. Plus, the fact that the song is 4:20 long is just icing on the psych-rock cake.”
